“Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.” Proverbs 25:14
I love May. May is my month.
May begins with the build up and celebration of my birthday. One week later, I am loved and pampered on Mother’s Day. The grand finale is our wedding anniversary. I guess receiving/giving gifts is my “love language” (if you’re into that).
Because May has 31 days, I read one chapter of Proverbs each day. On May 25th, I read “like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give” and it made more sense to me than ever. Two individuals, I’ll call them “Clouds” and “wind,” have been prominent figures in my life.
“Clouds” has numerous opportunities within the year to grow in size and color. She makes and breaks one promise after another. She can be small and wispy: “I am going to give you a day spa certificate this year.” (After all, a hardworking mother of four small children could use a good pampering). Or, “Clouds” can be large and ominous: “I’ll bring the fruit and vegetable trays to your sons birthday party.” (After all, a hardworking mother of four can’t be expected to feed the entire extended family all by herself). Either way, these clouds boast of rain and my hopes are buoyed. But, somehow, the pressure never drops and “Clouds” dissipates.
“Wind” is very different and sometimes dangerous. The thing about “wind” is I just never know about him. He comes and he goes. I don’t know where he’s been. I don’t know where he’s going. And I sure don’t know when he will be coming back. I do know I can find him on the fairways. My actions make no difference to “Wind.” He blows whenever and where ever he pleases. He is usually pleasant, not blustery. When he is here, I’d like him to stay.
I used to live at their mercy. So much depended on them and disappointment was a way of life. But God has taught me how to live in this place of uncertainty. I have one sure place to stand. My Rock, Jesus, is the only One who makes good on all of His promises. He never boasts. He does not have to. By His grace, I can enjoy “Clouds” and “Wind” with or without the rain.

One response to “With or Without the Rain”
Too bad neither one of them will ever read this, but I’m not sure they’d recognize themselves if they did.On the other hand, providing direct quotes, as you did, would probably clear it up.
