Popular Music or Warning: This is a rant!

,

Have I mentioned that I like Bob Dylan’s music? I learned today that we have something in common…we both despise what folks call “music” today. Here’s what Bob had to say about it:

“I don’t know anybody who’s made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really,”

Well, that may be a stretch. There have been some good records in the last 20 years. His Cold Irons Bound is awesome. Perhaps he is excluding his own work from his opinion.

Noting the music industry’s complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, “Well, why not? It ain’t worth nothing anyway.”

Amen! Here’s more:

“You listen to these modern records, they’re atrocious, they have sound all over them,” he added. “There’s no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like … static.”

If I do not have a cd in the van, and Limbaugh is over, I hit the scan button. There is absolutely NOTHING to listen to these days! It’s all bass OR great riffs sampled stolen from thirty-forty year old songs on top of bass on top of rap lyrics centering mostly on shaking body parts. Furthermore, the message in every song is the same! Variety is absent in Radioland. Even country music has gone farther south than the map! Why has this happened!?

I have one hypothesis. The problem is that all of the “stars” are in their early twenties or younger. This may not be entirely true of country music, but it is definitely true of pop and R&B. The love songs are terrible because those kiddos don’t know what love is! The lyrics are shallow and empty because they have not ever done anything worthy of a song. As most of them graduated from the state school system, they probably can’t write anyway!

I’ll go one more…Talent scouts are clueless. And don’t get me started on the nationwide embarrassment we call “American Idol.”

  1. I’m surprised you didn’t conclude with “Now, you kids get off my lawn!”Even though I agree with you totally.

Aah, Leslie a love of Bob Dylan means that you’re a fellow folkie. I agree with absolutely every word you said…I think Simon Cowell is a national(international) disgrace. I’m sorry we gave him to you!

Hey Leslie, Thanks for stopping by the site, themomiwant2be, and leaving suggestions for blogs. I appreciate it. : )Loved your post on music, but as a girl from Oklahoma I have to stand up for our girl, Carrie U., from American Idol. She’s amazing. : )

  5. Amazing, eh? I find it hard to believe that anyone on American Idol is “amazing.” Even I can sing, and if I had an entourage of image consultants and coaches I might even be “amazing” to all the idol-philos out there. In fact, if I had a mind to, I could win the whole thing. I AM from Alabama and we’re churning idols out like butter!NO! She is not amazing, as you say. The fact that you think so only serves to prove my point that musical talent is so pathetic these days that anybody with half a voice can be considered amazing!”Jesus, Take the Wheel” is yuck to the nth degree! Cookie-cutter- assembly-line-manufactured yuck!

  6. Oh ho! I sense some passion here! We have such a hard time finding music that’s actually worth listening to. Hubby loves Van Morrison. Finding Christian artists? Yikes! Most of the CDs we bought ended up in the trash. There is so much *junk* out there. It’s like what I say about authors of children’s books – people either write to make money or write because they are actually talented (and the talented ones are few and far between). Same can be said of music, I think.

  7. Amy–a bit too much passion? Sorry. And you are absolutely right about Christian music. Some of it is just terrible. I have had a difficult time finding something that is good music and sound lyrics all rolled into one. Alas, nothing is perfect.

  8. I would leave a comment about how so and so Christian artist is awesome and you should listen to them, but since I don’t know any that are, I won’t.
