What’s in a name?

, ,

I found this at Wendy’s blog and thought it was very interesting. I plugged in the names of all the family. The most unique name in our household is Noah.

In high school, I shared my whole name with one other person. The strangest part was that we even looked alike. One Valentine’s Day I thought I had received a dozen red roses from an admirer. It turned out that the secretary called for the wrong Leslie. Bummer.

How many have your name?

When I think about my name, a few anecdotes always come to mind. First, my mom decided to name my brother and me after some couple on a soap opera. I’m not entirely sure this is true, but, if I remember correctly, she says there was a couple on General Hospital called Lance and Leslie. I was born first. I wonder what she would have done if I had had a sister?

Second, when I was in eighth grade, my US History teacher was making fun of my name. He asked if my brother’s name was More-ly. I didn’t get it at the time. I get it NOW, though. Less and more? Get it? Anyway, I told him another story about my name, also from my mother. There is a song called “Groovin‘” that my mom has always enjoyed. Mom says there’s a lyric in the song: “Life would be ecstasy, you and me and Leslie, groovin.’” Sounds cool to have a name after a song lyric, right? I thought so. That is, until a few weeks later when the same teacher confronted me with the actual lyrics to the song. They go like this: “Life would be ecstasy, you and me, endlessly, groovin.’” I always wondered why the song was about “you and me” alone and then this Leslie person shows up in the chorus. I cannot listen to that song anymore without remembering how stupid that was. Thanks, Coach Hubbard! By the way, he was one of my absolute favorite teachers and coaches. I still see him from time to time, as we are both involved in the local track club.

Third, “I’m not Lisa.”

Fourth, “To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it” (Revelation 2:17) He has put a new Spirit within and He has a new name for me, too. (Have you heard the song “You Changed My Name” by Travis Cottrell? I bawl every time I hear it.) I’ve got a new name, completely unique. It will fit me perfectly because it is specially chosen by my Father in Heaven, the One who KNOWS me. And one day, He’s going to tell me what it is. I don’t know about you, but that thrills my soul.

  1. My maiden name was very strange to the folks in my hometown. We were the only family with that name in the phonebook and nobody except my friends ever said it properly. Over in Finland it’s a different story….quite common.

I have not heard the song but I too love the verse. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Yes a supersize self statue is definately a sign of an oversized ego.

  5. Nobody in the U.S. has my name. There were 179,981 with the same first name of Renee, but no one with the same last name. Absolutely no one with my same last name. What’s wrong with that? My husband has my same last name. My children have my same last name and I have two children. That makes three people with my same last name. Then there’s my in-laws,, let’s see,, there are at least 10 of them. Not trusting that little tool any more.Oh, and I, too, love the Rev. scripture about my new name that only the Lord and I will know. It’s like he will have a secret nickname for me.
