Thursday Thirteen: Most Common Phrases Heard in My House

This is my first attempt at a Thursday Thirteen post! If this is not too difficult, then I may do this every week. The first idea that came to mind is to list the 13 common words and/or phrases heard in my house this week. Here they are, in no particular order:

  1. I believe I can fly. (this has to be sung)
  2. Boom shack-a-lack-a!
  3. Shhh!
  4. I can hear you! (usually spoken when the kids think they are being stealth-like and I can hear every sneaky detail)
  5. Bike-Tri-Motor-Dog! (it’s a long story and one the kids made up)
  6. _______ is out of his bed!!
(yelled from a bedroom when anyone gets up from bed)
  7. If you only knew the power… (a Star Wars reference)
  8. What did I just say?
  9. It’s girls/boys night to help! (depending on which night it is, this is the defense when arguments ensue about who helps me cook dinner)
  10. Wha you wanna to do? (asked nightly by an adult after kids have gone to bed, and always with an a Liverpoolian accent, a la “The Vultures” in The Jungle Book)
  11. I duh know. Wha you wanna do? (the nightly response to #10)
  12. What can I have for a snack?
  13. Go pick out a book to read.

  1. Too funny! Do you have to make up your own topic?

  2. Well, I’m not really sure. I think so. You can tell I don’t know much since I forgot to link to the other Thursday Thirteen bloggers.

  5. I am cracking up at the snack question! I think my kids burn calories as soon as they consume them.

  6. I am SO GLAD that I am not the only person who thinks of and copies Disney’s birds–when the topic of what to do comes up.No one ever knows what I am talking about. I think it is probably the only movie I ever quote–ok, except for Chicken Little’s “Tomorrow is a new day.” :)(Are the “I don’t know whaddya wanna do birds” in the Jungle Book or Dumbo? I always thought it was Dumbo–but I could SO easily be very wrong.)

  7. I’m so glad to see other spouses share their own lingo/language/weird quote system. There are things that Chris and I have said to one another for the last 17 years that other people would find quite peculiar! I love sharing the weirdness that only he & I “get”.

  8. Amanda–they may be in Dumbo, too. I haven’t watched it nearly as much as I have The Jungle Book–it is my all-time favorite Disney classic–and I’m certain they are in it. Anybody else know for sure if they are in Dumbo?Kim–we throw around movie quotes almost daily. I think we’re hilarious, but other people probably thing we’re just dumb. We have our own codewords, phrases, and inside jokes that we use around the house. It’s lots of fun for us and keeps us close. We have one line that goes all the way back to our very first date!

  11. Love it, Leslie. :0) As you well know, being a relative, our home is much like yours in the movie-quoting realm…I think it runs in the blood. The birds in Dumbo are black birds / crows and speak with an African American accent while the British vultures are definitely in The Jungle Book. I can see you and Karl saying that to each other. Take Care! Bonnie

  12. Thanks to your Aunt Bonnie!!So, I ask “what ya wanna do” with an African American English accent, and Yall ask in a British English accent. very interesting!!Now, I am going to have to rewatch both Dumbo and Jungle Book to compare them myself!
