I have anticipated the release of Becoming Jane all summer. So much, that when we saw Ratatouille, I said to my husband, “Don’t forget, Becoming Jane comes out soon.”
Well, those individuals who made it to an early screening have written their reviews. I must say I am very disappointed. Carolyn McCulley says that Becoming Jane is Not Very Becoming of Jane, tells me to save my money and watch the A&E version of P&P instead.
Carolyn does mention her friend, Lori Smith, who maintains two Austen websites and has a book coming out in October entitled, A Walk with Jane Austen: A Journey into Adventure, Love, and Faith. She has written her first impressions of Becoming Jane. At least I’ve found two great sites to visit:
Following Austen and Jane Austen Quote of the Day.
I may go see the movie anyway, with the expectation that it will not be what I was expecting as far as the development of the characters. I think I’ll still be able to enjoy it, if it’s a good movie. If I can enjoy Nacho Libre, I can enjoy Becoming Jane, right? Sure, they’re on opposite ends of the movie spectrum…I’m rambling.
Rotten Tomatoes has a 65% rating at the moment. There are links to lots more reviews from this site, if you’re interested.

Oh! This is not good news. I am planning to go see it tomorrow, the first time I’ve gone to the movies since my third child was born (and probably the last for a while after my fourth is born =D).I find when I have low expectations, I enjoy the movie better. Looking forward to reading about what you thought next week!

I too was looking forward to it…going all alone no doubt. I did persuade my husband to go see Pride and Prejudice in theaters (and he was one of two men in the sold out auditorium on opening day) and he admits to enjoying the movie, but I feel quite certain that was his limit.Anyone up to a movie out with the girls, bad reviews or no? 😉

Bummer! I’ve been wanting to see that too. I will probably still go and, like you said, just keep my expectations low.

I’d love to go along, too. If you go I’ll be interested in your review. Blessings…

The movie is entirely fictional, right? I’m still looking forward to seeing it, but I typically am not a big fan of taking the lives of true historical figures and fictionalizing them on film (like Pocahontas). It’s misleading. Truth is so much better than fiction. =)

Becoming Jane is what is called speculative fiction. It is very loosely based on a few facts. I think I’m going to wait for the dvd. Karl wants to see The Bourne Ultimatum instead.

Hi Leslie,I hate to say it, but I am kinda enjoying the Austen book I am reading. Of course, they didn’t speak with as good a’ english as we’uns do, but it ain’t half bad!

Have you seen the new one on Beatrix Potter? (I think it is called Miss Potter–it’s in the rental stores already.) I have not yet, but she is one of my all-time favs. I’m hoping the movie will be good.
