The SC Primary Debate

My man says that my blog has strayed from its original intent since I started writing more about politics. So true. I just get so fired up!

So, did you watch the debate? We ordered pizza and had ourselves a little party.

You can’t really have a good debate without good questions, and I thought the questions tonight were excellent.

Fred Thompson won me over. He had some fantastic, conservative answers. He demonstrated a strong understanding of all the pertinent issues. He showed how his viewpoint differed from the other candidates. His plan for dealing with immigration is the most realistic. His experience in the Senate, and on the Intelligence Committee gives him a strength the other candidates do not have. He showed a firm understanding of the importance of our relationship with Pakistan, and the others did not. Most of his answers resonated with me. All around, he really stood out. I wish he had been more assertive in the other forums and debates!

While I appreciated Huckabee’s unashamed answer about our faith and practice, he is not a conservative. He had an opportunity to really show that tonight. I don’t like how he has to continually backtrack on his statements and clarify what he means. When he says in every debate that he has to tell me “the facts” again, I know it’s just political speak before he starts changing the subject to something else he did as governor. It’s all spin. His immigration plan makes no sense whatsoever because it is unenforceable. Not only that, its not conservative. He’s too soft.

Did you know that some democrats voted for Huckabee in the republican primaries because they believe he could be easily beaten in the general election? He may have gotten the evangelical vote in Iowa and New Hampshire, but he also got the saboteur vote. I don’t feel good about that.

I like Ron Paul, but I disagree with his idea of what American foreign policy should be. I know what the constitution says about war and whatnot, but I can’t ignore the reality of terrorism that we find ourselves facing. I think we need to be more offensive than Ron Paul is willing to be.

Rudy, Mitt, and McCain had some good things to say. I think Giuliani is a strong leader, but I think he would be about as socially conservative as Huckabee. And his stance on abortion bothers me. I think Romney is a smart businessman who loves this country and who would stand for conservative principles in Washington. I haven’t read enough about him to know where he stands on all the issues, but I wouldn’t cry if he won the nomination. I know McCain has served this country well for a long time, but I just can’t get over the fact that he helped draft legislation that is a clear infringement of our first amendment rights. I think he’d be quick to take this country into another war theater. And he’s waffled on immigration. Plus, he’s been in Washington for so long. The democrats are right on one point–things need to change in Washington. Don’t we say that at every election cycle?

Well, I’m signing off. We have a very busy weekend ahead of us.

Now it’s your turn. Which candidate won you over?

  2. Thanks for sharing this. I’m trying to learn more about all the candidates right now. You and Kim (lifesong) seem to be on the same page, her post today is so similar to yours. 🙂

  3. Not being critical here…just truly want to know. Where did you get the information about democrats voting in republican primaries for Huckabee? Did they change their affiliation specifically to do that? How can that be verified? Thanks.Lisa P.

  4. We watched 70% of it until Tivo did something weird when we paused it and started recording something else. (Instead of commercials, I have my man fill in the gaps for where the men missed. Trust me, my man should run for President.) Fred reeallllly impressed me (had some good chuckles from him too) and Mitt was smooth.

  6. I think Fredh was the best at the debate by far! I wish he would be more fired up…I’m just wondering if he can come back at this point. I liked some things Huckabee said…and Mitt Romney…I’m not sure about the others….Good post, Leslie!

  7. You’re wondering if he can come back at this point? Kim, you’ve been listening to the news too much. There have only been two primaries (and one of them wasn’t even a primary). And they weren’t even in predominantly conservative states! It’s soooo early in the game. Don’t worry about it. There are 48 states to go.The talking heads on television want you to believe that Fred doesn’t stand a chance. They want to narrow the field before we get a chance to vote. IT’S NOT RIGHT NOR FAIR for them to do that. Don’t listen to them. Everyone just needs to vote for whomever they want to vote for and not worry about the pundits.
