Why is prayer necessary for Christians?

I haven’t forgotten about my little series on prayer. I want to start with what the Heidelberg Catechism teaches us.

Why is prayer necessary for Christians?

Because it is the chief part of thankfulness which God requires of us,

Psa. 50:14-15
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and perform your vows to the Most High,
and call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.

and because God will give His grace and Holy Spirit only to those who earnestly and without ceasing ask them of Him, and render thanks unto Him for them.

Matt. 7:7-8
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Matt. 13:12
For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Luke 11:9-10, 13
And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!

Eph. 6:18
Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.
