A Book-Lover’s Meme

Rebekah of Sweet Tea with Lemon tagged me for this book meme.

1. Do you remember how you developed a love of reading?
All I can really remember is that I loved it when my mom, or my aunt, or my grandmother would read books to me. Mom, who would have enjoyed a life in theater, always gave her vocal interpretation of a book and its characters.

I also remember spending weekends with my grandparents and how my grandmother would tell me stories until I fell asleep. A couple of times she fell asleep mid-story and I had to nudge her so she could finish.

I remember the first time I read something without help. Everyone started freaking out and patting me on the back and saying, “You’re so smart.” I remember liking that a lot.

2. What are some books you loved as a child?
Anne of Green Gables, The Secret Garden, Dr. Seuss’ books, Little Women, Disney stories (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc.), The Story of Ping, Danny and the Dinosaur, Where the Wild Things Are, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Ugly Duckling. My grandmother would tell me old stories like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Rumpelstiltskin, and Rapunzel. I loved The Babysitters Club series. I think I read all of those. I still love Beverly Cleary’s character, Ramona. I know I read all of those books.

3. What is your favorite genre?
Non-fiction.

4. Do you have a favorite novel?
I’ve read The Lord of the Rings a few times.

5. Where do you usually read?
I usually read in our living room. I like to curl up on the couch and sit under a lamp. I also like to read in bed.

6. When do you usually read?
I usually read a little in the mornings, afternoons during “reading time,” and before bed.

7. Do you usually have more than one book you are reading at a time?
Yes.

8. Do you read nonfiction in a different way or place than you read fiction?
I don’t read in a different place. But when I read non-fiction, I usually take notes or make an outline while I’m reading.

9. Do you buy most of the books you read, or borrow them, or check them out of the library?
I usually buy non-fiction books and check out fiction books from the library. Most of the books I have right now were given to me so that I can write a review for them.

10. Do you keep most of the books you buy?
Yes. I have sold several books on eBay to make room for new books, but I regret doing that. Even though the books I sold were ones I knew I didn’t want to read again, sometimes I think it would be good to have them just for reference.

11. If you have children, what are some of the favorite books you have shared with them?
The Chronicles of Narnia
Little Women
Danny and the Dinosaur
Where the Wild Things Are
The Ramona books

12. What are you reading now?
The Missionary Call by M. David Sills, History in English Words by Owen Barfield and The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace. I spend some time every day in whatever book our Sunday School class is studying (right now it’s Colossians). On Sunday afternoons I’ve been reading a psalm and its corresponding chapter in The Treasury of David.

13. Do you keep a To Be Read list?
I don’t have a written list, but I do have a pile or two. I could take a picture.

14. What’s next?
Nancy Leigh DeMoss’ trilogy, Brokenness, Surrender, Holiness.

15. What books would you like to reread?
Desiring God
Future Grace
The Great Gatsby (I remember really liking this book, but I don’t recall why).
The Mitford Series
Tom Clancy’s novels (Anyone else like Tom Clancy? I have a funny story about how I started reading his books).
The Lord of the Rings
Living the Cross-Centered Life

I haven’t decided yet if I want to reread The Religious Affections with Tim for this round of RCT. I may.

16. Who are your favorite authors?
I honestly don’t know how to answer this one. Someone asked me this question the other day and I could not answer him. I just love to read.

  1. I haven’t read a Tom Clancy book in years, but I DO like his books. Especially Patriot Games. So what is your funny story?

  2. It’s probably been about 8 years since I’ve read a Clancy book, but they are exciting reads. The story behind my reading Tom Clancy novels:It must have been 1995 because I was reading The Bridges of Madison County around the same time as the movie came out. Karl and I were discussing the books we were reading and he considered the one I was reading a total waste of time and good paper. He took one look at the cover and said, “Garbage.” I tried to defend it, but he wouldn’t have it. I think he said something about how I needed to read a “real” book. So we agreed that we would give each other the books we were currently reading when we finished them. I gave him Bridges and he gave me Without Remorse. That was pretty much the end of my romantic novel reading.

I really love to read too.Who do you do your reviews for? I have some friends that do them for The Old Schoolhouse magazine, so I was wondering if that’s what you’re involved in…I remember all the Beverly Cleary books when I was a child and Judy Bloom, too!

  4. I like Tom Clancy, too! We like a lot of the same books…you even mentioned a few I’d forgotten to put on mine. Thanks for playing along.

Oh, I do love to know what everyone else loves to read! I was just thinking the other day that I would like to re-read “The Great Gatsby” as well. And I love the Mitford series!
