Children grow up so fast. Like Mary, there are moments to treasure up in my heart and ponder. I want to share two little moments that warmed my heart last week.
Abbey picked up a small piece of paper with her fingers and placed it in the palm of her hand. She hurried over to where her daddy was sitting. She opened her hand, kissed the paper and blew.
“I’m blowing you a butterfly, Daddy. That means I love you.”
He smiled and they giggled together.
“Here, let me do it again,” she laughed.
I was making sandwiches for the family Sunday afternoon. I knew the girls would want theirs to be heart-shaped, but I wasn’t too sure about my boys. After all, they’re growing up and tend to eschew all things girly and/or babyish.
As I served, I noticed Benjamin staring at his sister’s sandwich.
“Would you like yours cut into hearts, too?” I asked.
“No,” he answered quickly. Then he started to grin and turn red.
So I asked again, “Are you sure?”
“Well,” he began and looked over to his dad and little brother, “you can do it today.”
Embarrassed, he tried to cover his broadening grin with his hand until he started to laugh out loud at himself.
As I pressed the hearts into his sandwich, Noah passed his plate back to me and shouted, “HEY, don’t forget about mine!”

That is so cute! Thankfully the boys grow slowly into men as they should, but that does not keep them from wanting Mom’s gentleness, does it?

It’s small moments like those that I can only hope to remember as a mother. If they can’t be etched onto our hearts, there’s always blogging to help us remember. I hope little Benjamin will always ask for a heart-shaped sandwich!

That is sweet. I know what you mean about wanting to treasure those moments. They grow so fast it hurts to think about it sometimes.
