In Season 1, the creators introduced us to the fuselage passengers and used flashback as one storytelling device. In Season 2, we were introduced to the tailies via flashback. Then, in Season 3, though flashback is used to do some storytelling, the finale blew our minds with the introduction of flashforwards. In Season 4, we learn how the Oceanic 6 left the island, their off-island stories being told through flashforward. During Season 5, they confused us all for a while when they introduced time travel.
I have read that we are not going to see anymore time travel in the final season. The creators and writers are employing a new device to tell the story. And as I fell asleep last night, Karl and I were discussing this new device. What could it be?
I had been asleep for about half an hour when I heard, “Hey, are you awake?”
“I’m not now,” I slurred. I’m a light sleeper; motherhood will do that to you.
Just too eager to wait til morning, he said, “I’ve figured out LOST.”
“Everything is going to be in reverse,” he said. “You know how when Sawyer makes that phone call to Kate and that time Walt’s words are backwards…well, I think this season the action is going to be backwards.”
“What?” I asked.
“You know how at certain points people’s words were backwards? I think they thought they were talking normally, but in real time it was actually backwards. The people on the island will appear to be going forward through time, but because of the incident, time on the island will actually be moving backward.”
That made a lot more sense when I was half-asleep.
What do you think the new storytelling device will be?

That’s a really interesting theory! Especially if it ends up that Jack really did explode that bomb and it really does reset everything back to where they never crashed. Then they could end the show with everyone getting off the plane in LA just as if nothing had ever happened. I wonder…..might be a little depressing, though, because then none of the personal growth we thought might be happening through all this will have taken place (Sun and Jin still have problems, Jack still has problems about his dad, Kate still in custody, etc.), and none of the connections will have been made, either. I kind of like the theory that it’s all a big game that’s being played and the people are pawns, but I’m not sure I like the implications of that, either.
Whatever they do, it’s going to be interesting, that’s for sure. And I will be very glad to have answers finally.

Darlton have said that the finale is going to be very satisfying for fans. If that’s true, then the last three years on/off the island won’t reset everything. My theory is that the flash at the end moved Sayid, Kate, Hurley, Jin, Jack, Sawyer, Juliet and Miles to the present to be with the Ajira folk….when Jacob said, “They’re coming,” maybe he was referring to the people on the beach AND the ones stuck in 1977.

okay, so i watched season one of lost for the first time a couple of weeks ago. i’m trying to decide if i should keep going with it. am i too late? do i just try to read summaries? Do i take the time to watch each episode? It is kind of fun to discover it for the first time.

Hmm, I think, if you tried to read summaries and jump in for season 6, then you’ll be (ahem) lost. Definitely catch up by watching the episodes on dvd or abc.com. Then again, if you don’t really enjoy the emotional investment in a t.v. show and would rather just know how it all ends….by all means, read up and start watching season 6 tuesday night. There are several short videos that summarize the whole story, too: some made by abc and some made by fans.

Oh I love the backwards idea! Although, that might be just a little too weird. Plus, like Rebekah said, if Jack really does blow up the bomb then none of them ever met, etc., and that would be no good either.

Oohhh, I like the idea of bringing all the guys from the past back up with the ones from the present. LOL…..weird it is!! But sooooo addictive. And, I agree, it won’t be all that satisfying for this fan if it ends up with them never having met at all.

I think what is going to happen is that the plane is going to land as it was supposed to, and that none of them are going to know or recognize each other. Somehow the time travel will have saved the plane from crashing and everyone will go about their lives as if it never (did it?) happened…

Oh, I hope not, Lindsey. I’m banking on, “What happened happened.” The plane crash was already a part of their pasts. 1977 was their present. There’s no undoing the crash. At least, that’s what I think right now. š
