Little brother and me, summer 1985

Running errands today, the suffocating Alabama heat reminded me of childhood summers spent walking from my grandparents’ produce store to the library to my dad’s barber shop for a bottled Coke to home. When Mom or Dad had a break in their workday, they would drive my brother and me over to the country club so we could go swimming. I remember Dad’s blue Ford pick-up truck: no AC, windows down, AM country music radio only, scorching vinyl seats that branded my thighs. Mom’s car, on the other hand, boasted air conditioning, cloth seats, and “Sussudio” as loud as she could stand it.

  1. I love childhood memories. I feel like I’m looking at a young Ben looking at your little brother!
