Benjamin (center) received Pie in the Sky by Lois Ehlert for his birthday. As he loves cherries, it has quickly become one of his favorite books. Upon realizing that part of the story is an actual recipe for cherry pie, he wanted to make one himself.
Benjamin, officially beginning first grade, is learning how important it is to follow directions. This is not your open-the-can-and-pour-the-filling-in-the-crust kind of recipe. As you can see from the picture, the kids are squeezing the pits out of the cherries. They are putting the juice in one bowl, the pits in another bowl, and the cherries in yet another bowl. “Evil eczema” prevented Benjamin from doing too much of the squeezing, as the juice irritated his skin, but he did the rest of the mixing of ingredients (with a little help from Noah and Abbey).
Reading a book, following directions to bake a pie, eating said pie…I think this counts as a school day! Ahhh, the beauty of homeschooling.

I shiver just reading about squeezing those cherries! My Hubby and I have eczema and so do two of our children. I mostly have trouble with my hands. Anything acidic is tortue, but I especially hate having to chop tomatoes.

Benjamin was disappointed that he couldn’t do more, but he was getting really itchy after all that juice. If I had thought about it beforehand, I could have put something on his hands that would have kept the juice from bothering him so much, but I was too focused on getting everything together for him to make the pie.
