The Routine

,

In my efforts to live a more disciplined life, I set about creating a schedule for myself. So far, the only thing I have managed to do is ignore my schedule. I would say that I live better within a routine rather than a rigid schedule. I pretty much do the same things everyday, in the same order, just at different times. Everything hinges on when I drag myself out of bed. Honestly, if I’m not already up before the kids, then everything hinges on when Noah-Krakatoa (always the first kid up) wakes me for breakfast. Our exchange goes something like this:

Noah: Mommy?
Me: Hm?
Noah: Is it up-time? I’m hundry. What’s for supper?
Me: It’s breakfast, Noah. How ’bout some Cap’n?
It happens every morning! Whether I’m still in the bed or up. Same conversation, unless we’re out of Cap’n Crunch. We are creatures of habit and ritual.

I was hoping I could miraculously make myself into a schedule-person by next Monday when we will officially mark our first day of homeschooling this year. At this point, I hope I show up.

  1. Amen sister! That’s me to a T. I have fun making a schedule – but it only lasts about a day. I like the way you put it, more of a “routine” girl. We do the same things each day too – just not always at the same time.

  2. Oh yes! I’m the same way, definitely more of a “routine” girl too. I’ve tried to schedule my day more, but it just causes anxiety and then I feel like a big failure because I couldn’t keep up. With several young children there are always unexpected happenings that can throw a carefully planned schedule upside down. Right now I’m working on just getting in the shower right away and getting dressed. My day goes so much better when I do this.
