Kim tagged me for the book meme, but if you haven’t read her book meme post, you need to. It’s great! I promise you’ll get a big kick out of it. Go there, then come back here…
Here is a list of the books on top of my desk right now:
- The Practice of Godliness by Jerry Bridges (and the study guide).
- Heaven at Home by Ginger Plowman
- Emma by Jane Austen
- Fool’s Gold by John MacArthur
- The Mommy Survival Guide by Barbara Curtis
- The Amplified Bible
- An Introduction to Christian Writing by Ethel Herr
- Christian Writer’s Market Guide 2006 by Sally Stuart
Each one is about six inches away from my hand (so are the ones on the shelf just to my right, but I’ll try to keep my focus on the ones ON the desk). Which one should I choose for this meme? I finished Fool’s Gold a few days ago and hope to post a review of it very soon. I am going to start reading The Practice of Godliness tonight. Heaven at Home looks really good. I’m looking forward to reading that one. Ms. Curtis was kind enough to send me a copy of her new book for review–I’ll probably enjoy it! I really enjoy all the extra words in the Amplified Bible. The last two are for reference: I entertain thoughts of trying to actually, maybe, one day get paid to write. For this meme, though, I think I will go with the one that I am currently reading: Emma! This girl is a trip!
Find page 123.
Go to the fourth sentence.
Type the 5th, 6th, and 7th sentences.
Here they are:
They will be extremely glad to see you, I am sure; and one of my servants shall go with you to shew you the way.”
“My dear sir, upon no account in the world; my father can direct me.”
“But your father is not going so far; he is only going to the Crown, quite on the other side of the street, and there are a great many houses; you might be very much at a loss, and it is a very dirty walk, unless you keep on the footpath; but my coahman can tell you where you had best cross the street.”
Just for fun, can I include the sentences from a couple of the other books? They are begging to be picked up! Books are my bestest friends and I don’t want to leave anyone out. Well, I’ll exclude the ones at my bedside (they won’t know the difference). You won’t mind, will you?
From Fool’s Gold by John MacArthur:
Although not true in every case, the theological depth that generally characterizes contemporary praise choruses is not as profound and not as precise. In fact, for some songs it might be appropriate to ask if the contemporary church is collectively guilty of dishonoring God with our faint praise. By contrast, read the final stanza of a classic hymn of worship, “Immortal,Invisible.”
From The Practice of Godliness by Jerry Bridges:
God expects no less of us today. Our responsibility to pursue holiness, even in the midst of a wicked society, is just as great as was the first century Christians’. Yes, it gets more difficult each year; the temptations seem more numerous, the ridicule of the ungodly toward those who seek to live a godly life grows more abusive. But we are still called to be holy as He is holy.
From Heaven at Home by Ginger Plowman:
“And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should” (Colossians 4:2-4). Praying for God to open doors of opportunity to share the gospel has been an exciting adventure for me.
From The Mommy Survival Guide by Barbara Curtis:
For big cleanups and small, work is distributed according to one principle: Delegate any task to the youngest capable of doing it. Can it be done differently? You may have grown up with a mother who was so perfect that she ironed your jeans.
If only I grew up with a mother who was so perfect she ironed my jeans!! I hope at least one of those quotes piqued your interest in a book. Thank you, Kim! I had lots of fun with this meme. I tag Mrs. M, Shawnda, Wendy, and Janet. I’m off to put together a Spiderman scooter!
