The Image of God in Man

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26-27

Although the image is terribly marred from the Fall, God has allowed mankind to retain certain characteristics of His image. Those parts of His image that made mankind uniquely “in His image,” namely His righteousness and holiness, however, are completely and utterly absent from man. It’s going to take me a few posts, but what are those characteristics of His image that I think we retain?

First, God has dominion over all of His creation and God created man to have dominion over the earth. Though we are fallen and do not perfectly perform our duties, we still exercise authority over birds, fish, livestock, and creeping things.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens,
and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

Psalm 8:3-8
