The Christmas Meme

Melanie of Motherhood Apologia tagged me for The Christmas Meme. I tag anyone who wants to do this meme because all of my usual (and potential) tag victims have already been tagged. All I ask is that you leave a comment telling me you’re doing it so that I can visit you.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Both! You may recall that last year I made Santa Sacks.

2. Real tree or artificial?
Artificial. We have a big one for the whole family, two small ones for the kids’ rooms, and Karl has his very own tree just for his Star Wars ornaments.

3. When do you put up your tree?
For the past several years, we’ve put up our tree the weekend of Thanksgiving. This year, however, we have had to put the tree-trimming on hold because of all that is going on in our house. I’m hoping to get it up this weekend, though. Um, in reality it probably won’t happen. Please don’t get me started on this year’s Christmas…I think I might cry. WE HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED USING THE CHRISTMAS CHINA!! I feel like I live in one of those snow globes and someone keeps shaking it.

4. When do you take the tree down?
I start putting everything away January 1. It usually takes a few days.

5. Do you like eggnog?
Never tried it, but my friend Heather says I’m missing out.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?
I have a doll that is very special to me that my maternal grandparents gave to me when I was a child. I named her Laura Lyn, called her La-La for short, and I still have her.

7. Do you have a Nativity scene?
My MIL gave us a very nice one a couple of years ago. And we have another made of wood that we put in the playroom. I don’t mind if the kids touch that one.

8. Hardest person to buy for?
Well, I can think of someone, but I won’t say who it is.

9. Easiest person to buy for?
My husband. Give that man a DVD with lots of explosions and folks getting killed and he’s a happy camper.

10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
I can’t think of one.

11. Mail or email Christmas cards?

12. Favorite Christmas movie?
I really don’t have a favorite.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
When I feel like it. HA! Actually, I do very little Christmas shopping. My husband loves Christmas and he loves to buy gifts for me and the kids. He does not enjoy searching for gifts for our extended families. That task falls to me. Last year, I did every bit of it online (and probably disappointed everyone a little bit by giving my favorite gift: books). It was the best shopping experience I have ever had! Well, except for that one year Karl and I went shopping by ourselves–that was fun. I am probably going to get it all done this weekend. Reality? Not going to happen.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
I don’t think so.

15. Favorite things to eat at Christmas?
Peppermint flavored things.
Hot Apple Cider.
Green bean bundles.
Sweet Potato Casserole.
Sugar cookies. I think I need some right now.

16. Clear lights or colored on the tree?
For several years we were clear lights people. Then, when Hannah was about four, she asked that we get colored lights. We haven’t turned back.

17. Favorite Christmas song?
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
Stay home. Not that we won’t do any traveling. We are usually home for Christmas Day, though.

19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?
Yes. Cue the music! You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donder and Blitzen. But do you recall…the most famous reindeer of all? Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer….

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Both. And maybe one a week early. Karl bought something for me Thanksgiving weekend and couldn’t wait to give it to me. So, a month early for some people…but we always make the kids wait until Christmas morning. We’re mean like that. Oh, alright. Maybe they can open one on Christmas Eve.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of year?
All the junk mail asking for donations. BA! HUMBUG! Not really.
Being told that a particular item is this year’s “it” gift is what annoys me. Remember the Dancing Elmo? Why?

23. What is the “corniest” family tradition you do, or miss doing?
I miss waking my parents at 4 a.m. after they’ve only been in bed for about two hours.

24. Ugliest Christmas Decoration ever invented?
Those air-filled yard decorations.

25. Which looks the best, theme trees or homey trees?
I am a fan of the homey tree. Every single (well, almost every singe) ornament we own has a story. And we rehearse all of those stories every year as we pull out the ornaments one-by-one. Hannah can remember who gave her which ornament and why. She’s amazing.

26. What does Christmas mean to you?
Hark! The herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners, reconciled.”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With angelic host proclaim:
Christ is born in Bethlehem.”
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth

Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

  1. Evan has a tree in his room and this year he had enough Star Wars ornaments to decorate as a theme. Too funny!

  2. I love this meme.I’ve tried eggnog. I don’t think your missin’ a thing :)You can come and visit us in our crazy snow globe anytime. I *totally* feel your pain. Our tree just went up last night. No ornaments. No outside decorations because of the construction. Baby + two-week trip + 1st year homeschooling + addition being built onto our house =Lunacy.

  3. That was fun. I’m kinda in a snow globe too. Some years are crazy and that’s just what it is. I do enjoy egg nog (light). Oh but what I really wanted to say is that I clicked a couple times cuz I wanted to read more about that new literary Bible. Must add it to my list…

  4. “his very own tree just for his Star Wars ornaments.” cracks me up, that does¡

  5. Loraena–yeah, Karl got kind of tired of me asking him to keep the Star Wars ornaments to the backside of the tree.Mummymac–I don’t have all of the questions either. I saw one the other day that had 40 questions! 40!

  6. Wow! I am terribly envious of the fact you don’t have to do most of the shopping. Every year I think about ordering everything on-line but as usual I procrastinate and now it’s probably too late. Oh well, mabey I’ll get out next week.Your hubby’s tree would be a sight to behold I’m sure…mabey you can post a picture?

  7. Melanie–it is a feast for the eyes and ears! I’ll post a movie of it.
