Chapters 8 and 9 of Future Grace focus on the promises of Romans 8, a chapter of scripture that is most precious to John Piper because “it abounds with promises of future grace [and] shows me [John Piper] the solid logic of heaven that makes the most far-reaching promise of future grace as firm as God’s love for his Son Jesus.”
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
Piper likes to turn it upside down in these two chapters (8 and 9 of Future Grace) to show how verses 28 and 32 find their firm foundation in the verses sandwiched between them. He calls Romans 8:28 a massive structure built upon an equally massive foundation of Romans 8:29-30. We can know that God will graciously give us all things and work all things for our good because he has already given us His Son! We know that we will be glorified in Christ because we are justified in Christ. We are justified because he has called us in Christ. We have been called because he first predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ. And we are predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ because God first foreknew us. “The point is that the chain cannot be broken: all the foreknown are predestined; all the predestined are called; all the called are justified; and all the justified are glorified. The point is to guarantee that everyone in the chain will reach the goal of glory.”
