In Proverbs 8 I found the personification of Wisdom. In verse 30, Wisdom says, “and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man.” It delighted me to simply meditate on that for a little while.
Proverbs 8 is a beautiful poetic description of wisdom. “Whoever finds her finds life and obtains favor from the Lord” (verse 35). That’s what I want. My favorite part is the description of wisdom in primordial time. I really enjoy reading about first things and events, ancient things.
At the same time I was reading this portion of Proverbs, I was working my way through Jesus’ kingdom parables in Matthew. While I did not see the word delight, it did help me to see specifically how Jesus used wisdom to teach the disciples and how he is the wisdom and righteousness of God.
Back to Proverbs. A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight. Proverbs 11:1
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight. Proverbs 12:22 (This verse encouraged me to press on with a task I would rather not continue. I’m going to finish!)
I also noticed when people showed delight. In Acts 13:48 and following, Luke tells us that when Paul finished preaching “the Gentiles…began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region…and the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” Throughout the book of Acts, we can see two responses to the Gospel: anger and hostility or delight and rejoicing. My prayer is that I would always delight in it.
