Getting Ready for School

We bought our curriculum for the next school year this Saturday at our state’s homeschool convention, and I thought some of you would like to know what we’ll be using this year.

Bible–The Big Book of Questions and Answers
Herein Is Love, Exodus
(these things won’t last a whole school year, but we’ll move on to Leviticus and keep going)

Medieval History to present–Sonlight 3

Reading/Writing–Sonlight Readers 3 and 3-5, K

Spelling–SWR and Spelling Power

Grammar–Shurley Grammar, Levels 1 & 2, Language and Thinking for the Young Child

Math–Saxon 3 & 1

Science–Apologia

Prima Latina

Woodworking w/ Dad
Golf (?)
Piano
And Hannah wants to learn how to play the flute. Considering that she can’t stop whistling, I am going to be looking into these lessons for her.

The kids finish swimming lessons in two weeks. Once that is done, we’ll start school. I like to take a long break around Christmas, so it helps us to start early.

I spent some time considering what our daily schedule will look like this year. I have two children who have to do school and two children who beg to do school. (I forgot to mention that we are using Rod & Staff preschool materials for Abbey. She is sooo excited!) I am going to be so busy this year from sunrise to sunset. I am not sure how this blogging thing is going to fit into my life. I’ll definitely be around for the next two weeks, though. I want to finish what I started with Adam and Eve.

I recently finished reading Shopping for Time by Carolyn Mahaney and her daughters. I plan on using their recommendations for time management. They detail how to determine which things are worth your time in whatever season of life you happen to living in right now. It’s a great book and it hits the shelves this week!!! Look for my review and my interview with the Mahaney Women at Discerning Reader tomorrow!

Looks like a busy year 🙂 We will start back in August officially, however we do a little here and now. I pretty much school year round but take things very lightly in the summers.I didn’t realize apologia was available for the younger set. I have had my eye on some of their things for the upper years!

  3. Sounds like you have a great plan! Not sure if I want to read that book, especially if it means I need to get my priorities in order. Ha! 🙂 No, seriously I will be getting it.

  8. I am SO ready to start! Next week is my week to plan and order. I just bought some things from Peace Hill Press (curriculum by Susan Wise Bauer). Have you used any of it? It’s a new path for me since I am so used to A Beka. But my oldest has been doing a lot of classical lit and reading for a long time now.

  10. Oh that’s good to hear. I am so nervous about “venturing” out of my comfort zone. I mean, I know it will be a good thing, and I do feel lead to do so. But still…. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I’d like to know all the things you used for Bible thus far. Maybe we should email. I am going to be away for a week and most likely may not have email (very slow dial up – I mean s-l-o-w as it can get) so I may check in. I am definitely going to keep using the shorter catechism. But would still love to use something else. Any suggestions? I am just so used to everything A Beka (academics).
