Sunday Hymn Theme: The Church

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken
Text: John Newton
Music: Franz Joseph Haydn

Glorious things of you are spoken, O city of God.
Psalm 87:3

Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts! Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an untroubled habitation, an immovable tent, whose stakes will never be plucked up, nor will anyof its cords be broken. But there the LORD in majesty will be for us a place of broad rivers and streams, where no galley with oars can go, nor majestic ship can pass.
Isaiah 33:20,21

1. Glorious things of thee are spoken,
Zion, city of our God;
He whose word cannot be broken
Formed thee for His own abode.

On the Rock of Ages founded,
What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation’s walls surrounded,
Thou mayst smile at all thy foes.

2. See, the streams of living waters,
Springing from eternal Love,
Well supply thy sons and daughters,
And all fear of want remove.

Who can faint while such a river
Ever flows their thirst to assuage?
Grace which, like the Lord, the Giver,
Never fails from age to age!

3. Round each habitation hovering,
See the cloud and fire appear
For a glory and a covering,
Showing that the Lord is near!

Thus deriving from their banner
Light by night and shade by day,
Safe they feed upon the manna
Which He gives them when they pray.

I have never heard this hymn–never even read the words–until today. A little while ago I pounded out the melody on our piano. The words and the music are beautiful, in my opinion. This is one great hymn!

  2. I love this one too. Actually grew up on it an many others dear to my heart. We do not hear them enough now, but the good ones will come back in time. At least the ones the Lord wants back — He is sovereign, even in the music of the Church. I bless Him and bless you.
