The Three Uses of "We"

One more reason to love Sonlight: The Beam. This newsletter is always full of encouragement and helpful information. A little home school humor is thrown into the mix as well. I found the following bit just too good to keep to myself.

My son told me that there are three uses for the word “we.”

In normal usage, we means you and I. Then there’s the royal we which kings use to mean I. Last is the maternal we which means you, as in “We need to clean your room.”

That kid has a wicked wit.

I tend to overuse the “maternal we.” How ’bout you?

  1. Glad that tickled your funny bone. My dad blogged about it to, so it must be universal! [smile] ~Luke

  2. Funny. Yep, I use that maternal 'we' quite often, too.
