The last Tuesday of every month 5 Minutes for Books hosts “What’s On Your Nightstand.” I missed it yesterday. I didn’t realize we had reached the end of May already. Time is flying!
In May, I read:
A Proverbs-Driven Life by Anthony Selvaggio (review)
Just Do Something by Kevin DeYoung (Tim Challies’ review piqued my interest in this book.)
Queen Mom by Brenda Garrison (a review of this book is coming)
I started reading recently:
Take Charge of Your Life by Richard Ganz (Discerning Reader review)
Me, Myself & Lies by Jennifer Rothschild — This is actually a small group Bible study that I’m previewing for the ladies at my church. The jury is still out on whether or not I’ll recommend we do it. I get the feeling that the leader would need to pause the video or direct the discussion around the popular psychology in here and I’m not sure that this study would help us know God better, which is the whole point of Bible study. I want to know God! I want to know His Word! Forcing positive self-talk isn’t going to help me live a righteous life, is it? I’ll keep reading. Maybe Rothschild will get us there before the end.
For June I want to read:
Humility by C.J. Mahaney
This little gem has occupied my shelf far too long; it’s time to read it.
The 7 Hardest Things God Asks A Woman To Do by Kathie Reimer & Lisa Whittle
Today was the first I have heard of this book. The title grabbed me immediately.
I do lots of reading to the kids. In May, we finished The Family Under the Bridge and The Secret of the Andes. We finished Genesis, started Exodus, and are still reading Luke. We started reading The Fellowship of the Ring. We’ll probably still be reading it in June.
Most importantly, I’m fighting to keep up with my Bible reading plan. It’s a good fight, though. In May I finished Leviticus and started Numbers. I’ll finish the Psalms on May 31. I’m going to miss them and The Treasury of David, but I am pumped about reading Proverbs. I finished Isaiah and Obadiah. I started reading Joel today. In the New Testament, I read Ephesians, Philippians (one of my favorites!), Colossians, and 1 & 2 Thessalonians. On Monday, I started 1 Timothy.
I have just about given up trying to finish Calvin’s Institutes. Maybe next year.

I’ve been wanting to read “Just Do Something” too, ever since I saw Challies’ review!Haven’t heard of “7 Hardest Things” but like you I’m intrigued!

We’re reading Exodus with our kids now, too – just finished Genesis. Also were reading The Fellowship of the Ring, but I need a break. It’s hard to read out loud and it’s looooong. Now I need to go read that Challies review to see about the book you mentioned.

I’m reading Packer’s Knowing God (again – I read it and Stott’s The Cross of Christ often). I’m also reading Frances Mayes’ A Year in the World–I love travel books, and the chapters on Portugal take me back to my son’s wedding there: lovely! I need to get into some good fiction–maybe it’s time for Jane Austen again.

Good list, Leslie. I'm still reading "Future Grace". I just picked it up again after a long hiatus – I'm in chapter 9. =)Also just finished a bible study on the Beatitudes by John Stott with ladies in my church. Excellent. It looked easy, but it's been hard hitting.Josh and I are in the midst of reading "Radical Reformission" (Driscoll) together. That's good too.I have stacks of other books I've started or am hoping to read, but I'm limiting myself to only listing the priorities right now. =)
